Colleges and Universities in Europe
With a long tradition of educational excellence, universities in Europe are poised to provide the education and skills needed to launch students into an exciting career future. While today's economy is tough for countries around the world, students at European schools can still build skills in the right areas to allow them to enter a field that is experiencing growth.
Why an EU university degree is essential in today's economy
A June 2011 report from the International Monetary Fund reported that the European debt crisis could slow projected global economic growth. However, some European economies, such as those in Germany and France, saw strong growth in recent quarters. Additionally, according to a report by the Government of the Future Centre, in conjunction with Oxford Economics, as many as 2.6 million jobs could be created in the United Kingdom by 2020. During the same period, 3 million new jobs are expected to be created in Germany and 1 million in Spain.
In recent years, Europe has become a mecca for small businesses. France and Britain have slashed taxes and red tape to allow more fledgling businesses to flourish. Germany has increased state aid for start-ups. But the job market remains competitive, and those with a university degree have an edge in the hiring process.
Perks of education at a European university
Each country offers unique aspects of the university experience, and European nations are no exception. But the open borders among EU countries means that the entire region is open for exploration on weekends and holidays. Youth hostels are affordable accommodations for students that offer a diverse set of neighbors while allowing students to save money. An exceptional public transit system makes getting around most European countries very easy, and high-speed rail makes fast work of longer commutes. Programs designed for students, including the International Student Card, offer generous discounts for museums, attractions, and events.
Despite all the perks of attending college in European countries, universities in Europe have been in the news lately for negative reasons: Many students have taken to the streets in Europe to protest tuition hikes at EU universities. However, enterprising students can rise to the financial challenge with creative scheduling, including the option of taking courses online.
A degree from an EU university can launch your career
According to Fortune Magazine's Global 500 report, Europe's largest industries include oil and gas, insurance, financial services, energy and auto manufacturing. Britain's National Health Service, a health services agency, is the largest employer in Europe, with 1.3 million staff employed. A degree from a European university can lead to a wealth of employment possibilities within growing industries, health care and more.
