Colleges and Universities in Florida

While Florida residents know just how much the state's amusement parks, beaches, resorts, and fun and sun attract visitors to the state, Florida also has a lot to offer in terms of education. Florida sports fans might say that's due to the popularity of Gator Nation, the University of Florida's combination of sports teams. However, the school is actually renowned for other reasons, including--at 50,000 students--having one of the largest student populations in the country.

While the University of Florida in Gainesville allows students to study in fields such as business, education, health care and more, there are many other universities as well as four-year colleges, community colleges, technical schools, and career colleges in Florida to attend. Students can also find law schools, medical schools and seminary schools to meet their needs. From the Florida Keys Community College to the South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary and even the Florida Coastal School of Law, Florida students can discover the right kind of training to succeed.

Outlook for a career in the Sunshine State

Some of the fastest growing careers in Florida require an associate or bachelor's degree while only a diploma or certificate may be needed for others. Positions for home health care aides are expected to exceed growth of 27 percent during the 2008-2018 decade; however, the occupation is not high paying. Jobs for registered nurses, nursing aides, and postsecondary teachers are also expected to grow much faster than average during the same period and these offer varying wages. Other areas growing as fast or faster than average include accounting and auditing, elementary school teaching, food preparation and service, and more.

Representative occupations and mean annual wages earned in Florida for some of these occupations, according to 2010 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, were:

  1. Accountants and auditors: $63,600
  2. Elementary school teachers: $49,820
  3. Home health aides: $21,660
  4. Nursing aides: $23,780
  5. Postsecondary teachers: $69,860
  6. Registered nurses: $63,010
  7. Restaurant cooks: $23,370

With more than 300,00 students enrolled in the state's university system alone and some of the lowest tuitions in the country, Florida offers a wide number of choices for students making smart choices to get ahead.
