Indiana offers its residents diverse educational opportunities. Top colleges and universities include the University of Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue, as well as state and private colleges, online schools and community colleges. The Indiana University School of Medicine, with a main campus in Indianapolis and nine regional campuses, educates the second largest student body in the U.S.

Major components of Indiana's economy include agriculture, biomedical, energy products, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals. According to the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the state has facilities that house businesses such as Biomet, Roche Diagnostics and Zimmer. The state is also home to five Fortune 500 companies including Eli Lilly and health insurance provider WellPoint. On top of that, the state had the third fastest-growing economy last year, according to CNN Money. This can benefit college graduates looking for jobs.

Fast-growing occupations in the state and the mean wages earned by workers in those fields in 2010 were, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  2. Management analysts: $78,540
  3. Registered nurses: $57,820
  4. Postsecondary teachers: $64,480
  5. Physicians and surgeons: $207,210
