Massachusetts: An economy on the rebound

The recession hit the country hard. However, Massachusetts is one state that wasted no time rebounding. According to the Commerce Department, it has the fourth fastest growing economy in the nation. It is also headquarters for Fortune 500 companies such as Liberty Mutual, Staples, State Street Corporation and Thermo Fischer Scientific. Key industries in the state include defense, financial services, information technology and life sciences. There are several in-demand occupations in Massachusetts that require a college education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean earned wages for some of these occupations were:

  1. Accountants and auditors: $75,030
  2. Computer hardware engineers: $115,190
  3. Medical scientists: $91,230
  4. Network and computer systems administrators: $80,280
  5. Registered nurses: $84,990

Did you know Harvard is considered to be the first university in the country because of its founding in 1636? It makes sense that many students turn to colleges and universities in Massachusetts, with its long tradition of quality education, to pursue their degrees.
