Colleges and Universities in Nevada

Tourism, not surprisingly, is Nevada's top industry and brings in more than $58 billion to the state economy each year, according to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Students seeking to start a career in tourism or one of Nevada's other major employment sectors can get a leg up with a postsecondary education in the state. These include the University of Nevada, which has campuses in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada State College with a campus in Henderson and several community college-systems. The school is also home to a few private colleges including Sierra Nevada College, at Lake Tahoe, which offers unique degrees in fields like sustainability and outdoor adventure leadership as well as more traditional programs.

Computer careers could be a good choice for college grads

Some of the largest employers in the state are in the gaming and lodging industry. These include businesses like the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, and the Mirage, all in Las Vegas. However, International Game Technology, a major supplier for gaming equipment and supplies, such as slot machines, is also on the list and located in Reno. IGT employs many people with computer-oriented skills. Nevada has no state income tax or corporate income tax.

Computer-related tech jobs dominate the list of fastest growing occupations in the state, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Mean earned wages, according to 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics, for some of the state's occupations predicted to grow fastest were:

  1. Computer software engineers, software: $83,910
  2. Computer software engineers, applications: $77,720
  3. Industrial engineers: $73,450
  4. Pharmacists: $108,240
  5. Network systems and data communication analysts: $74,110
  6. Physicians assistants: $69,830

These occupations are predicted to experience job growth of 27 percent or above during the 2008-2018 decade. Roll the dice and see if one of the colleges and universities in Nevada could be right for you and lead you to a career within the state.
