Tourism, not surprisingly, is Nevada's top industry and brings in more than $58 billion to the state economy each year, according to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Students seeking to start a career in tourism or one of Nevada's other major employment sectors can get a leg up with a postsecondary education in the state. These include the University of Nevada, which has campuses in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada State College with a campus in Henderson and several community college-systems. The school is also home to a few private colleges including Sierra Nevada College, at Lake Tahoe, which offers unique degrees in fields like sustainability and outdoor adventure leadership as well as more traditional programs.
Computer careers could be a good choice for college grads
Some of the largest employers in the state are in the gaming and lodging industry. These include businesses like the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, and the Mirage, all in Las Vegas. However, International Game Technology, a major supplier for gaming equipment and supplies, such as slot machines, is also on the list and located in Reno. IGT employs many people with computer-oriented skills. Nevada has no state income tax or corporate income tax.
