Colleges and Universities in New Jersey

Life isn't all "Jersey Shore" when it comes to New Jersey, the fifth smallest state in the country. As residents know, there is plenty to experience within major cities in the state--like Newark, Jersey City, and Trenton--although the 127 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean is certainly a draw to residents and out-of-state vacationers. These cities are also home to many schools, including Seton Hall University Law School in Newark, Hudson County Community College in Jersey City, Thomas Edison State College in Trenton and more. In fact, the state's 20 four-year colleges and 21 two-year colleges provide a diverse range of educational opportunities for students, including the dental or medical education needed to enter the growing health care field.

'Snookying' up to your first job after college in New Jersey

Some of the occupations in New Jersey that are predicted to grow by more than 20 percent during the 2008 to 2018 decade are in health care. However, some categories expected to see job growth, such as veterinarians and physician assistants, pay more than others, such as home health aides. In addition to the health care sector, employment opportunities are also expected to increase nearly 20 percent in other occupational fields, such as funeral attendants, tree trimmers and pruners, and preschool teachers. Representative occupations and earned mean annual wages for workers in New Jersey were, according to 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  1. Funeral attendants: $37,440
  2. Home health aides: $22,370
  3. Physician assistants: $94,790
  4. Preschool teachers: $35,680
  5. Tree trimmers and pruners: $37,030
  6. Veterinarians: $125,790

No matter what educational path you choose, New Jersey colleges offer opportunities to help you make a start and seek a comfortable living--whether that's in the city or at the beach.
