The mining sector, which saw an 8.8 percent increase in jobs in the final quarter of 2010, is Wyoming's top economic contributor, responsible for a third of the state's total economic output. However, it's probably no surprise that tourism is a significant component and that it added $2.6 billion to the economy in 2010, according to Wyoming Business Report. Energy is also big business in Wyoming. The state has the largest coal-producing region in the U.S., is one of the top producers for natural gas and is considered one of the most favorable areas in the country for wind power development, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Many occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or beyond are expected to grow by 22 percent or more during the 2008-2018 decade, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The mean earned wages for workers in some of these occupations, according to 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics data, were:

  1. Computer software engineers, systems software: $65,460
  2. Network systems and data communications analysts: $62,520
  3. Personal financial advisor: $73,690
  4. Petroleum engineer: $86,930
  5. Physician assistants: $97,890
