Riverside, with a population of just more than 303,000, is the largest city in the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area. The 2010 annual financial report for the area found that most new jobs were in local government, education and health care. Major employers in Riverside include HUB International of CA Insurance, Kaiser Permanente, Riverside Forklift Training and Riverside Community Hospital. Many of these employers look for qualified applicants who hold a college degree.

Riverside is home to several large colleges and universities, as well as many smaller institutions of higher learning. One of the largest is the University of California at Riverside. U.S. News and World Report has ranked UCR as a top-tier university, sixth in the nation in diversity and 25th on its "Great Values, Great Prices" list. UCR offers 80 bachelor's degree programs in fields as diverse as electrical engineering, physics, and religious studies.

Riverside is also home to at least two Christian colleges. Among these is La Sierra University, established in 1922 and affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist church. The college offers 60 undergraduate programs and a number of advanced-training programs. California Baptist University, opened in 1950, boasts 100 undergraduate majors and concentrations in fields such as education, health care, and legal studies. U.S. News and World Report named CBU one of the best regional universities for 2012.

As part of the Riverside Community College District, Riverside City College offers students certificates and associate degrees in a number of fields, including applied technology, business administration, early childhood education and world languages. Other career colleges in the area offer a wide variety of program options, including training for medical assistant, paralegal or pharmacy technician positions.
