San Jose is the best mid-sized American city for college students, according to a 2011-11 study by the American Institute for Economic Research (Sun Journal, 2010). The city had the most favorable rating for factors such as cost of living, employment and earning potential, entrepreneurial opportunities and research opportunities. In a city with nearly 1 million people, more than 35 percent of adults over age 25 hold a bachelor's degree or higher, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Studying in San Jose: Colleges and Universities

According to the City of San Jose website, the municipality has the greatest concentration of technology expertise in the world. More than 6,600 technology companies are located in the area and employ more than 254,000 workers, according to the City of San Jose. Located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, the city is home to corporate giants like Adobe Systems, Cisco Systems, eBay, Hitachi, and IBM. Both Cisco Systems and eBay, as well as San Jose's Sanmina-SCI, are listed on the Fortune 500 list. Graduates from San Jose's 17 community colleges, its California State University, and private schools can look for jobs in the city's technology firms, as well as in health care and finance.

The flagship school is San Jose State University, occupying 19 city blocks in the heart of the downtown area. As a highly ranked top-research university in the nation, SJSU currently offers nearly 70 bachelor's degrees and more than 60 master's degrees. Some 31,000 students are currently served by an award-winning faculty and collaborators from the corporate world and community.

In addition, The National Hispanic University calls San Jose home. Established in 1981 to serve the needs of Latinos, other minorities, and women, National Hispanic University offers four-year degrees in subjects such as business administration, child development, computer information systems, math and science, and more.

San Jose is also home to accredited, two-year colleges such as Evergreen Valley College, and San Jose City College. Evergreen serves more than 12,000 students and offers programs in engineering, math, science, and more while San Jose City College delivers programs in areas such as the language arts, math, and science, to approximately 18,700 students a year.

Vocational and Trade Schools in San Jose

There is a large assortment of private vocational and trade schools in San Jose offering programs for students with a career focus in fields such as cosmetology, massage therapy, medical assisting, applied sciences and business. Carrington College California, Everest College, Kaplan College and National Holistic Institute all have campus locations in San Jose.

San Jose is located at the foot of San Francisco Bay, an area rich in quality institutions of higher education.
